Remembering Betty & Jack Harris
Heartfelt sympathy to the family of Jack Harris, beloved husband of Betty Harris, a founding member and past president of The Landings Garden Club. Betty’s commitment to the garden club extended well beyond her year as president and Jack always supported her work. Betty produced The Landings Garden Club Yearbook for many years; indeed, if memory serves me, she produced the original one. It was Jack, so skilled on the computer, who organized it for her. I kept the membership lists on my computer at the time Betty was producing the yearbooks, and I got to know Jack very well during that time. He was always cheerful and interested in what was going on in my life.
Aging is not for sissies, and aging for Betty and Jack has been cruel. I would meet Jack at the fitness center and it seemed apparent he had some deteriorating disease. If you inquired about his health, he would cheerfully respond that he was doing very well. He kept up with his physical regimen at the club, working hard to maintain his body at whatever level it was. Betty, an intelligent, alert, involved woman, suffered a deteriorating mental condition over the past few years, and although she would come to some meetings, was no longer able to participate in garden club activities. She gave garden club her all, when she was able to, and the garden club would not be what it is today were it not for her efforts on its behalf.
